Ethnographer/Media Researcher for international media study

at Leuphana University Lüneburg in China: Shanghai

The Centre for Digital Cultures at Leuphana University Lüneburg (Germany) and its User Research Lab are driving an international media research project in co-operation with the BBC World Service (London, UK).

We are looking for an ethnographer/media researcher based in China, who takes part in our international long-term research project about news and media consumption. The project started one and a half years ago and consists of a network of eight countries with 30 participants. These participants, social media-savvy heavy news followers, document their news consumption into a digital media diary and are willing to take part in additional ethnographic research.


  • Manage our Chinese network of participants
  • Recruitment of four new participants
  • Motivate four participants to document their personal news consumption (participants receive a compensation)
  • Observe and interview participants, when necessary
  • Reflect on and compare participants’ news consumption with general news situation in China
  • Act as cultural broker, possibly translate some data
  • Answer short, specific questions from time to time
  • Write monthly reports (app. two pages)
  • Optional: Conduct three days of ethnographic research with four participants over app. two weeks on a breaking news event, including visual material and writing up


  • Academically or professional trained ethnographer/media researcher/user researcher
  • Flexibility, due to the nature of breaking news events
  • Excellent English skills
  • Experience in digital and/or media ethnography/research a plus
  • Preferable based in Shanghai


  • Start: As soon as possible
  • End: March 2014


  • 190 Euros a month
  • 400 Euros for recruitment and observing/interviewing of four new participants
  • Additional reimbursement in case of ethnographic research on breaking news event
